Curriculum

English Language Arts (Reading and Writing)

Since its founding in 2015, Ethos Academy has utilized Core Knowledge, specifically Core Knowledge Language Arts, as its primary ELA curriculum for scholars in grades K-3. The McGraw Hill Wonders and StudySync programs serve as the primary ELA curriculum for scholars in grades 4-8, and align with the K-8 Core Knowledge Sequence and Common Core Standards.

To support the early literacy development of all scholars, Ethos Academy also utilizes the Core Phonics Program, which emphasizes phonological awareness through daily phonics practice, while providing diagnostic and prescriptive interventions to meet the unique learning needs of all scholars.

Additionally, the Step Up to Writing Program provides all K-8 students with a multi-sensory, explicit, and systematic approach to teaching writing and is designed to provide clear strategies, methods, and support for increased student success. This school-wide program allows for consistency and growth as children advance through grade levels. Created for all students, the strategies in Step Up to Writing are designed to be used to support writing instruction in all content areas.

Math

Ethos Academy uses McGraw Hill (MyMath K-5 and Glencoe Math 6-8) for its mathematics curriculum.

The McGraw Hill My Math Learning Solution provides an accessible and flexible way to diagnose and fill gaps in understanding so that all students can meet grade-level math expectations – and accelerate beyond.

Glencoe Math makes math real for students and meets them wherever they are in their learning. Rigor is built-in and supported throughout the program and differentiated instruction resources ensure approaching-level students master concepts before moving on, while beyond-level students are continually challenged.

Science

To prepare scholars for success on Arizona's end of year science tests (AZSCI), Ethos Academy uses both Core Knowledge (grades K-5) and the McGraw Hill Integrated iScience program (6-8). Together, these programs ensure scholars have ample opportunities to practice content aligned with both the Core Knowledge Sequence and Common Core science standards.

Ethos Academy incorporates Core Knowledge fine arts and music, as well as physical education, health and nutrition content into our special areas classes. Ethos Academy also has a campus-wide character development program that emphasizes respect for “self, others and surroundings.”

History, Geography and Civics (Social Studies)

The broader K–8 Core Knowledge Sequence exposes students to a broad range of historical, scientific, and cultural topics that develop a foundation of knowledge which builds upon itself year after year. History and geography, as well as science are seamlessly integrated throughout the Core Knowledge Sequence of study. This comprehensive curriculum provides an excellent foundation in preparing scholars for success in college and 21st Century careers.

Homework at Ethos Academy

Reading 20 minutes a night: If a student begins reading for 20 minutes a night in kindergarten, by the end of sixth grade, they will have read over 1,800,000 words per year—the equivalent of 60 additional school reading days—and are likely to score in the 90th percentile on standardized tests. Research has also indicated that nightly reading practice is a key factor in acquiring new vocabulary.

Math Facts Night Practice: Math facts are important because they form the building blocks of higher level math concepts. When a child has mastered their math facts, these concepts will become significantly easier and the student will be better equipped to solve them faster.
